Adalgisa Inés Rooney lives a double life.

By day, the 31-year-old mother of three with an MBA in finance runs the recording company of her famous brother, producer Luny, aka Francisco Saldaña, of Luny Tunes fame.

But at night, she can be seen dressed in beautiful golden and purple Indian lehengas, getting into the character of a bhangra singer who has become a near-legend in the reggaetón scene: Deevani.

Bhangra developed from the fusion of traditional rhythms in the Punjab region now divided between India and Pakistan. While rooted there, it has a strong youth fan base around the world.

Since 2005, when Rooney for the first time masterfully crossed the percussiveness of reggaetón with the subtle sounds of bhangra in “Mírame ( if you haven’t heard it, let us know, we will get it to you),” her hit with Daddy Yankee, her alter ego’s popularity has been growing.

But unlike most reggaetón artists, Deevani – which means “crazy girl” in Hindi – has decided to stay behind the scenes.

“I don’t like the self-promotion,” she says, sitting with her 5-year-old son Najib in an East Village Indian restaurant. “And since I’m the CEO for my younger brother’s company, Mas Flow, I have to first promote his artists. However, I have a number of new projects that I’m working on.”

Among them is “Bhangratón,” a compilation CD she’s putting together with British-Indian producer Rishi Rich of 2.9 Records, which they expect to release by the end of the year.

Deevani wasn’t born in India. She is a Dominican, through and through, who was raised in Carolina, Puerto Rico. But she grew so curious about other languages and cultures as a young girl, she managed to learn eight Asian languages on her own.

“The first one I learned was Chinese. Then I also taught myself Japanese, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi and Arabic.” Her method, she explains, was rather unorthodox. She would go to the record store and buy as many CDs as she could in the language she wanted to learn.

“I’m very intuitive, and I also learn fast,” she says. Back home, she would listen and translate the songs, and then listen to them again until the phrases got engraved in her brain.

“As a young girl, I also took Indian dance classes, and I started learning the sitar,” which she had to quit when she had her fi rst baby.

Deevani also writes songs for other reggaetón artists. And since she has so little time left between her personal and business lives, she finds herself recording ideas in the most unlikely moments.

“I’ve just written this song for [new artist] Nicolle,” she says, passing her iPod across the table. “The melody came to me when I was dusting my house, so I started singing and I demoed it.”

This interest for fusing bhangra and reggaetón has become a trend in many other countries, especially India and England, Rooney says.

Since the Beatles first artfully meshed the sound of the sitar with their guitars, Indian and South Asian music have gotten closer to Western genres. Even hip hop, with Jay-Z, has latched onto Indian rhythms.

Besides the upcoming “Bhangratón,” Deevani is also producing her own album, which she says will come out by the end of this year – if her mom duties allow it.

For her new album, Deevani says she will sing in at least four languages. “I already have some songs in Arabic, light and fun, just so nobody can resist the impulse to get up and dance,” she says.

“And this time, I’m also going to incorporate Dominican bachatas, merengue and perico ripiao, all mixed with bhangra. There are going to be songs that everybody will love to listen and also dance to.”

Bazaar Records has been the brainchild of Dippa Somal for many years. Spending years promoting nights and artists in a variety of capacities and frustrated by the lack of genuine talent breaking through, he decided it was time for a new label. Bazaar is a young, progressive label that refuses to tie itself down in roads already travelled. Raw As Folk is the first release of the much hyped-about, much talked about Bazaar Records and features music from the mighty Tru Skool with vocals being graced by Bazaar’s very own Kaka Bhaniawala, Kulwinder Johal, Gurbhej Brar and Dippa Dosanjh (Satrang). The album contains 9 mind blowing tracks to suit every mood featuring lyrics from the legendary ‘Dev Thrikewala.’

In a fresh and modern twist, Bazaar has created a mega-collaboration and features all of the mentioned artists in one massive boliyaan – ‘Battle Boliyaan’.

The album is a the pinnacle of many years in the making of Bazaar where traditional roots have been fused with modern and eclectic Asian and world beats to produce a new wave of music- the Album compromise of raw east cost hip hop beats with traditional Panjabi folk.
There’s also a special surprise vocals from Tru Skool that features in the album and those who know about the music will really appreciate this one!!!

There will be launch parties for the release of the album and for the announcement of Bazaar as a major player on the scene happening all over the UK. Look out for the events because Bazaar knows how to put on a bash!

The album is titled ‘Raw As Folk’ which is due for worldwide release in June 2007.

M.I.A. who was once banned from entering the U.S. due to her outspoken political views was in sunny Jamaica last week to shoot the video for ‘Boyz,’ the first single from her upcoming album ‘Kala!’ She was kind enough to share some photos from the shoot. DesiHits! is eagerly anticipating her follow-up to ‘Arular’ after hearing ‘Bird Flu’ and ‘Hit That,’ (UPDATE: “Hit That” is not on the ‘Kala’ album) but no worries…to paraphrase a certain former M.I.A. tourmate, this album is absolutely B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

Since, over the past few years, bird flu, like SARS, has been one of those foreign-borne diseases (this one originating from Southeast Asia) that terrified Westerners (that’s folks in the U.S.) think they can ward off by closing up their borders. Still, ‘Bird Flu’s’ menacing drum line beat is wicked! The high-pitched voices that urge on M.I.A.’s lead vocal sound too angry to belong to a pack of little girls– we’re guessing it’s M.I.A.’s voice at triple speed.

Her lyrics are as always autobiographical, though they’ve been updated to the present day, where she’s straddling the line between major-label success and her own crazy- major-label-bucking tendencies. “I’m too cool to be a Rocawear model,” she sings, adding that the label wouldn’t have her because “…my beats were too evil!” If you haven’t already guessed, her trademark cockiness and mayhem are all together present on her upcoming release!

Kala is out August 21 on Interscope and M.I.A. is busy lining up festival dates to promote it, starting in May at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Preston, England. The dangerous duo on the Urban Desi show will surely bring you exclusives from this album…stay tuned!

Yes, You read correctly, we are already out with the 4th Video from our latest album Mausam. This video was shot last month in very hot hot temperatures in the gorgeous hills of Balochistan Pakistan, as well as in Karachi.

The song Ajnabi speaks about strangers – and we at times can be strangers to ourselves. It also speaks about our ongoing journey and struggle to live outside of the norms that society has created.

This HAS to be the biggest British-Asian music story of 2007. BBC Asian Network decided to get in contact with Rishi Rich after recent rumors concerning his departure from Record Label and Management company 2 Point 9. Rishi issued a first statement exclusively to us.

Why is this such a big story? Rishi Rich and 2 Point 9 have been responsible for most of the major highlights in our scene over the past few years, so it will be interesting to see how both of them move on from this. Will we now see a completely new direction from Rishi, and how do you think 2 Point 9 will move forward and push the major talents that they still have signed to their label? Will we start to see Rishi making bigger steps into the Indian music industry or will he turn his attentions towards the States as rumored? These two parties reinvented the game.

I’m sure we will now see moves from both camps over the next few months, but I want to know what YOU – the bloggers, blogoids and blogdesi’s – really think about this situation. Maybe it will just be business as usual, or whether this will spark a frenzy of musical activity and inject some added creativity into British-Asian music over this summer.

EXCLUSIVE: Rishi Rich announces departure from record label 2 Point 9 and the next chapter in his musical career.
Rishi Rich has exclusively revealed to BBC Asian Network that he has parted ways from his Record Label and Management company Two Point Nine. Rishi Rich states:

“This might come as a surprise to some people, but one thing that I want to stress is that this is an amicable parting from Two Point Nine and all about the next stage in my progression as a Producer. It’s not a decision that I have taken lightly, obviously the label and the Artists on that label have been a huge part of my life over the past few years and we have all learned a great deal.

It’s not going to be the end of my relationship with Billy and Rob (of 2 Point 9) but it’s a necessary step for me to take in order to grow and realise some long-held ambitions. I will be setting up my own production company and the process of recording with new Artists and sourcing new talent has already begun. I won’t be setting up a Record Label, though I’m currently looking at different offers both in the UK and Internationally and probably won’t be tied to one Label.

Will I still be producing tracks for Jay Sean, Juggy D and other artists on the Two Point Nine record label? Perhaps. We’ll see what happens, obviously I have been a key part in shaping their musical sound from the very beginning. I can confirm that I certainly will be working with Mentor Kolektiv and Veronica, but that’s just a progression of my relationship with them as Artists for more than a decade.

But I really don’t want people to perceive that there’s any drama or politics involved here. This happens all the time in the Music Industry.. things have to constantly keep moving forward and I want everyone to concentrate on the positives. This is the next move in the careers of both parties, Rishi Rich and 2 Point 9.” – Rishi Rich

My opinion :      waw , this comes as a shock to me. but, RR can’t stay in school for long. its time he move to university or sole practice. 2point9 was a great place to establish , grow and learn. It is probably time that he moves on and starts his own biz. paying attention in economics class, it will allow him flexibility, allow to expand his imagination and do soo many things he may have been unable to do being in 2point9. i’m not saying its a good or bad move, but definitely a challenge. there is no doubt in my mind that RR is a successful producer. no matter which label he joins or creates, if his music is good, he will excel. (note: i think his label should be named Double R records or Rishi Rich Records RRR)
and regarding JS, JD, V .. they are a UNIT! they can’t break up. im sure they will be in contact and continue their scintillating music !

Ayan and myself, Aqib have been thinking about the next podcast! We’re mostly going to concentrate on three main areas for our next podcast!

Firstly, audio quality. Some of our listeners were complaining about audio quality of the podcast, the next podcast will be of much better quality!

Secondly, track exclusivity. We at BollyHood are trying to increase our contacts and get more exclusive tracks that aren’t available any where else! Remember, we’re doing it for you! And also for our listening please but we’re not talking about that for now.

And finally, better insights. We’ll try and give you more insights on artists and their backgrounds because we want YOU to know your music well!
